Liverpool FC completed the Manchester double by eliminating Manchester City and United in two different cup competition and in progress put themselves in a position to get a domestic double this season.
Having led the Carling cup tie against City, Liverpool overcame the mighty league leader in an entertaining second leg semifinals at Anfield which finished all square at the end of 90 minutes. Liverpool going through 3-2 on aggregate curiosity of Craig Bellemy’s goal at City in the first leg.
The result meant Liverpool Liverpool ended their 16-year wait for a return to Wembley to set up a Carling Cup final against Cardiff next month. It is Liverpool’s first cup finals since 2006 when they won the FA Cup and something would be a just reward for the amazing fans patience who had to wait so long to see their Reds in another Cup finals. For the owners, its their first taste of a cup finals and a chance to see Liverpool win a silverware in their first full season.
Another fourth round FA cup tie between England’s old rivals saw Liverpool winning against United in an entertaining encounter at Anfied. The match marked with few off filed incidents had a potential of turning into a bloody battle was instead marked with some high quality football and tremendous fan support for both the sides. Kuyt’s winner with two minutes remaining meant Liverpool took revenge for their last season FA cup exist in hands of United with booking their place in round five at expense of their rivals.
Manchester down shows Liverpool’s strength in the squad and the quality displayed on the pitch. With finishing in top 4 would define the success of the season, a win in Carling Cup and may be the FA Cup would get Liverpool back in trophy winning mode and get the fans, the owners, the manager and the players buzzing again.

Liverpool’s bid to win the FA this season took a giant leap on Saturday when they successfully overcame and defeated their rivals Manchester United in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Anfield.The results completed the Manchester double as Kenny Dalglish’s side after overseeing United noisy neighbors City int he semi-finals of the Carling in mid week.
The FA cup fixture was also marked with Luiz Suarez’s eight-match ban over racially abusing United’s defender Evra when the two teams met at Anfield in the league earlier this season. Suarez sitting in the executive box at Anfield was more than delighted to see this teammates battle out United challenge and knock them out of the Cup this season.
Dirt Kuyt was the hero at Anfield as he marked his 50th goal with his winner in 88th minute which set Anfield buzzing. Having seen Agger’s headed in 20th minute been cancelled out by Park’s goal for United in 39th minute, the tie was heading to a repay to Old Trafford with only two minutes remaining in the game. But a header assist from Andy Carroll setup Kuyt to volley it pass the United’s goalkeeper to send Liverpool in the fifth round of the FA cup.
With the Reds drawn with Brighton in the fifth round, they would be setting their sight on the quarterfinals already ready. Guy Poyet’s side would be on the high after defeating Newcastle in the fourth round but Liverpool FC at Anfield would be a whole new ball game. Liverpool should be focused on the league now with trips to United on the road before making a trip to Wembley to play the Carling up finals.
